Makgadikgadi Camp

Nestled under the palms and acacias of Hyena Island, Makgadikgadi Camp is located on the edge of the saltpans and adjacent to Makgadikgadi National Park.  The Makgadikgadi saltpans were once an ancient great lake, now a dried up lunar-like landscape of great wide-open uninhabited spaces and endless horizons.

This ancient lake reveals archaeological artefacts - Stone Age tools and ancient animal bones among the swirling dust devils of the dry season. However when the rains arrive, the landscape transforms, once again, into an extensive lake, attracting numerous species of bird, and the annual zebra and wildebeest migration.

Traditionally built using local artisans and their knowledge, Makgadikgadi camp is a unique and relaxing environment, combining comfort with the flair and colours of Africa. This is a small camp, accommodating only ten guests. Twin or double-bedded Meru tents, with en suite alfresco facilities (flush toilet and shower) provide a home from home. A thatched library, lounge and dining area, allow one to relax and savour the serenity and peace of this enchanted area. Guest may also enjoy the use of a small swimming pool, to cool off in the heat of the afternoon.

The Makgadikgadi Pans vary from a dry and dusty lunar landscape in the winter months to a large impenetrable inland lake during the rainy summer months.  Each season has a particular beauty, in summer when the rain has arrived the pans come to life, the birds and vegetation blossom, the migration comes to town - enjoy your days watching the bird life, following the zebra or just relaxing. In winter, the pans dry up the  migration leaves, but the true desert animals remain - take a night drive to spot the elusive nocturnally active species.  During the day, go out into the pans, either by vehicle or by bike.

Whatever the season you will find plenty to do, in this vast and magical region, and, at night, talk about the day’s event under the star filled skies whilst sitting around the flickering fire.
